We’ll also discuss how society in general can support these parents and their children with special needs.

RACHEL THOMPSON, CD, CBE, CLC

has had a passion for birth for as long as she can remember and has been actively involved in serving birthing women and their partners for the last 10 years. She received a BA in Nursing from Eastern Mennonite University in 1994. As her own family grew, the doors opened for her to study through Charis Childbirth Services to become a certified doula and childbirth educator.  She found that aside from her husband and eight children, her next love was birth and education concerning pregnancy and birth. Rachel has discovered such fulfilment in encouraging women and their families as they walk through such a miraculous process. The Motherhood Café: I'm Not Just Mommy: Finding Your Identity Outside of Motherhood

This is a topic born out of common conversations in our small groups. What is our purpose outside of “mother”? How does our role change once we’re responsible for children and how do we define self worth? How do we juggle careers with the needs of our young families? What are ways we can cultivate our own interests and relationships when the demands of family change? This is a morning of questions, self evaluation, discussion of our own core beliefs and finding a path to self awareness.

Adoption Support Group: Navigating the Birth Family Relationship Part 1

Children and youth who have been adopted naturally have questions about their background and personal histories (Who am I? Who do I look like? Why was I adopted?). Through openness, adopted children and youth gain access to birth parents, and possibly grandparents and siblings, which removes the need to search and helps provide needed answers to compelling questions. Regular contact during childhood creates a base of familiarity and normalcy for adopted children so that they may connect more easily with their birth parents throughout their lives.

The Motherhood Café: Understanding Fertility Part Two : Male and Female Infertility

Our previous Cafe covered body function and family planning. Today’s conversation is about understanding infertility. Infertility is defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of unprotected intercourse. An estimated 15% of couples meet this criterion and are considered infertile, with approximately 35% due to female factors alone, 30% due to male factors alone, 20% due to a combination of female and male factors, and 15% unexplained. Though infertility is common, couples often struggle silently. Infertility should not be taboo. We owe it to ourselves and our friends to learn about it -- and talk about it! Our panel will consist of women who have (or are) experiencing infertility, as well as, fertility experts. Let's help to eliminate the stigma and bring light to these issues. 1 in 4 women will experience infertility or pregnancy loss. You are not alone.

Due to insurance reasons, children over 1 are not allowed in the building. Childcare registration, for ages 1-4 is FREE of charge and available below. Childcare slots are limited and registration is on a first come first serve basis.

Her heart is to come alongside women with love and compassion, to serve with understanding and skill, and to minister with excellence.

The Motherhood Café: Maternal Mental Health : Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder Awareness

Motherhood is often challenging. Beginning in pregnancy and continuing through the early postpartum days, we are adjusting to a new role, a new identity. Our life can feel constantly interrupted or out of our control. The way we see ourselves and even define our worth may change. It can become more difficult to prioritize self care. Finding time to evaluate our health, physical, mental and emotional, may seem impossible when managing the needs of an infant or a busy, growing family. However, being a mother shouldn’t mean that we neglect ourselves. Today we’re going to talk specifically about the mental health of mothers. We’ll touch on the symptoms of common disorders and challenges and chat with other mothers and professionals about the ways we can evaluate our health, and how to nurture ourselves while juggling the needs of our families.

Due to insurance reasons, children over 1 are not allowed in the building. Childcare registration, for ages 1-4 is FREE of charge and available below. Childcare slots are limited and registration is on a first come first serve basis.

The Motherhood Café: The Breastfeeding Cafe : A Practical Guide to How Things Work, Variations of Normal and When to Seek Help

The Motherhood Collective is not a “breastfeeding only” organization and we fully support all methods of infant feeding. The best baby is a FED baby and the way you feed your baby is your decision. However, we think breastfeeding is worthy of its own Cafe topic and hope that you find this morning’s information educational -- whether you breastfeed or not! This will be a morning of conversation with some of our area’s most knowledgeable breastfeeding resources. How does breastfeeding work? What should you expect in the earliest days? How do you know if you’re doing it right? What are common issues and how do you know if you have them? What kind of help is available? What are common misconceptions? We hope everyone will leave this topic having learned something new about breastfeeding!

Due to insurance reasons, children over 1 are not allowed in the building. Childcare registration, for ages 1-4 is FREE of charge and available below. Childcare slots are limited and registration is on a first come first serve basis.

Childcare registrations can be made by emailing: childcare@themotherhoodcollective.org

Adoption Support Group: Adoption and Behavioral Challenges Part 1

While we can’t ignore or excuse the behavior that comes with the mad feelings, we can be compassionate and empathetic about the sadness they’re experiencing. We can choose to shift our focus from punishing the behavior to calming their big feelings and giving them a chance for a ‘re-do’ once things have settled down. Armed with these insights, we find ourselves more able to stay connected to our children.

Peer-to-peer support for women walking through every step of foster care and adoption. Supporting and educating women as we acclimate to life (in any season) with foster and adoptive children. Offering the opportunity to validate experiences, share resources, and gain support and encouragement.

Do you know the #1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth?

Anxiety and depression.

It is true that approximately 60-80% of new mamas experience the Baby Blues, a period of temporary moodiness beginning 1 to 3 days after delivery symptoms usually disappear within two weeks. For some of us, 20% of new mamas to be exact, we experience something more than the Baby Blues. We experience Postpartum Depression. While the symptoms are similar to Baby Blues, they are more persistent, lasting throughout the day and longer than two weeks, they can impair a mother’s ability to function. Postpartum Depression can occur anytime during the first year after delivery.

The good news is for mamas experiencing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD) you are not alone! 1 in 5 new mamas are affected. With help you will be well.

Support groups can be an important part of recovery. Talking to mamas that have survived PMAD can be very helpful. Support groups offer the opportunity to validate experiences, share coping strategies, and gain support and encouragement.

Please join us the second and fourth Mondays of each month.  For immediate support, email contact@themotherhoodcollective.org.
